INTO THE WOODS - Chapter 1

Chapter 1

My name is James Hartenborrow and it’s my 18th birthday. I wanted to celebrate it in a crazy weird way by going to an abandoned cabin up in the high mountains of flagstaff and luckily my birthday is close to the end of my senior year of highschool. Although it’s pretty hard to plan anything special for my birthday since memorial day is close and all my friends are with their friends, But this year was different.

Most of my friends had no plans and they all wanted to do something fun after we all graduated this year. So when I brought up the idea of heading to that old abandoned cabin in the Flagstaff mountains, they were all surprisingly down for it. It felt like the perfect getaway, no parents, no curfews, just us and the open wild. But my friend Olivia, who I've known since middle school, said she might not come, which I was really hoping she would, because I've had the biggest crush on her and was hoping to ask her out soon. So I tried everything in my will to pull her into the idea of going by even going to the local burger shop where she worked and being an idiot as always.

“Uh yeah can i get two double cheese burgers and you coming to the flagstaff trip” i said to the speaker box.

“I can’t James, I have things I need to do,” she said in a sassy attitude that she knew I hated.

“Well if you change your mind, text me” then i drove off.

Luckily for me she got in a heated argument and she needed to blow off the heat and decided to come with us to flagstaff. We packed our bags, loaded up my friend Logan’s beat-up Jeep, and started the drive up the winding roads just as the sun dipped behind the pines. None of us knew exactly what we were getting into, but we knew that once we got into careers and split into our own lives probably never seeing each other again.

The drive felt way longer than we thought it would be. Logan’s Jeep made weird noises the whole time, and it shook every time we hit a bump. Bryan was stuck in the middle seat and kept making the same dumb jokes from school, like when he spilled some punch all over himself at prom or when Ken got pantsed in the gym during spirit week. Ken didn’t let that slide; he reminded Bryan how he screamed during a fire drill freshman year and said it was because of “smoke in his eyes.” Everyone laughed . Olivia was still mad about the argument she had earlier, but I could tell she was starting to chill out. For a little while, it felt like nothing was changing. Just a bunch of friends being stupid like always.

But once we got deeper into the mountains, it started to feel different. The sun went down fast, and the trees looked kind of creepy, like they were watching us. When we finally saw the cabin, it looked super old and kind of broken. The roof was saggy, the windows were luckily not all busted, and the porch looked like it was at the verge of falling apart if we stepped on it. We all got out of the Jeep and just stared at it for a second. It was quiet too quiet, no phone signal, no people, just trees and the late nature sounds. I don’t know why, but it felt like the cabin had been waiting for us.

We gathered all of our stuff and carefully walked inside. The cabin was very dusty and spider webs were everywhere. We decided to clean a spot of the house and put sleeping bags down and sleep in there and tomorrow morning, we’d clean the cabin up and fully get it to be somewhat of a nice vacation spot. But before we hit the hay, we began to explore spots of the house. The house had to be from the early 1900’s and it just sat out here for years rotting. We didn’t really find much except for a few old trinkets but nothing huge.

We then group back in the room we’d be sleeping in which looked like the living room so it was pretty cozy. The night was pretty interesting and we couldn’t help but wait for the adventures we were going to have in the summer.
